Significance:

Research studies, literature reviews and surveys have shown a significant difference in the health outcomes and medical treatment of certain groups of patients in the current health care system. The phrase Health Disparities is used to describe these differences and the many dimensions of disparity and consequences that exist in healthcare.

Complex relationships exist between health, biology, genetics, behavior, socioeconomic status, discriminatory practices, the environment; achieving healthy equity remains challenging.  In addition, key social Determinants of Health such as ethnicity, gender, sexual identity, age, and disability all influence an individual’s ability to achieve optimal health as well.

These determinants of health have a direct impact on the health outcomes of our country as well as the world, attention to this area of health care and biomedical research requires further study and focus in order to improve our health care system and health equity for everyone.
